A Dust Temple morning: coffee, art and the creek from Isle of Palms

by | May 1, 2026 | Local Attraction

A Dust Temple morning is our favourite slow start on the Gold Coast, and it is barely ten minutes from Isle of Palms. The plan is simple: coffee and brunch at Dust Temple in Currumbin, a wander through the gallery, then down to Currumbin Creek for a paddle. Here is how to time it, where to park, and what to order.

Where do you start a Dust Temple morning?

Start with coffee. Dust Temple sits at 54 Currumbin Creek Road in Currumbin Waters, about a ten-minute drive south from our Coolgardie Street gate. Head out to the Pacific Motorway, cross to Currumbin and follow Currumbin Creek Road, and there is free street parking right out front that is easy before about 9am. The cafe opens at 7am Tuesday to Sunday, so early risers get the quiet version with the best light. It pours Single O coffee, and guests keep rating it as some of the best in the area. This is the one thing not to miss, so order a proper coffee before you do anything else.

What should you order and see at Dust Temple?

Dust Temple is a cafe and an art space in one, which is what makes it worth a whole morning rather than a quick stop. The kitchen runs breakfast and lunch until about 1.30pm, and the crowd favourites are the eggs benny with real bacon and house hollandaise, the French toast on caramelised baguette with berry compote, and a chunk of the banana bread that regulars describe as enormous. While you wait, walk the gallery: it rotates work from local and international artists, and at night the same room turns into a venue for jazz and slam poetry. Bring cash or a card for a small artwork if something catches your eye. There is a solid vegetarian and vegan spread too, plus a porridge that regulars swear by on a cool morning, so fussy tables are easy to please. Guests keep mentioning the relaxed, arty feel and the generous portions, which is why it suits a lingering weekend brunch rather than a rushed weekday stop. If you are short on time, skip the sit-down meal and grab a coffee and banana bread to take to the creek.

Where is the creek from here?

Once you are fed, Currumbin Creek is the natural next stop, and you have two options depending on time. For a proper swim, drive up Currumbin Creek Road to the Currumbin Rock Pools, about 12 kilometres up the valley opposite number 1206. The water is clear and calm, there are public toilets, barbecues and picnic tables, and best of all it is free. Parking up there is genuinely limited, so this leg only works if you arrive before the mid-morning rush. If you would rather stay close, the lower reaches of the creek near the cafe are better for a paddle and a picnic with little ones than a deep swim. Pack the coffee and banana bread from Dust Temple, find a shady spot on the bank, and let the kids splash in the shallows. The rock pools sit in the shade of the valley for much of the morning, so they stay cool even in summer, and the picnic shelters mean you have somewhere to regroup for lunch. Either way, the creek is the reward after the coffee.

How do you finish the morning?

The drive home is short and scenic, so there is no rush. If you swam up the valley, the run back down Currumbin Creek Road hugs the water through the rainforest before it opens out towards the coast, and you are back at Isle of Palms inside twenty minutes. If you stayed low, you can be back at the resort in ten, in time for a swim in the pool before lunch. The thing to skip if you are tight on time is the up-valley drive: a coffee, a wander through the gallery and a paddle in the lower creek still make a lovely half-day without leaving Currumbin.

FAQs about a Dust Temple morning

What time does Dust Temple open?

Dust Temple is open Tuesday to Sunday from 7am, with the kitchen running until about 1.30pm, and it is closed on Mondays. Get there early on a weekend for the best table and the quietest coffee, as it fills up through mid-morning with locals and families.

Is Dust Temple good for coffee?

Yes. Dust Temple pours Single O coffee and guests consistently rate it as some of the best in the area. It is the main reason regulars keep coming back, so it is worth the short drive from Isle of Palms even if you only stop for a takeaway flat white on the way to the creek.

Is there parking at Dust Temple?

There is free street parking along Currumbin Creek Road right by the cafe, and it is easy first thing. By mid-morning on a weekend it gets busier, so arriving before about 9am makes the whole visit smoother, especially if you are bringing a pram or a big group.

Can you swim in Currumbin Creek near Dust Temple?

Yes. The Currumbin Rock Pools further up Currumbin Creek Road are free and open all the time, with calm, clear water that suits families. Parking up the valley is limited, so arrive early. Closer to the cafe, the lower creek is better for a paddle and a picnic than a proper swim.

A morning like this is exactly why we love the southern end of the coast: coffee, art and a creek swim, all before lunch, all a short drive from your own lakeside townhouse.
